1. The Wandering Earth (2019)
Governments band together in the not-too-distant future to carry out an audacious plan: building dozens of enormous thrusters on the ground to eject our planet from the solar system when the expanding Sun threatens all life on Earth. Two teenage archaeologists find a massive lost steppe metropolis with Latin and Chinese inscriptions that includes the name Regum using contemporary technology. It began when General Huo Qubing, the vain and ambitious provincial prefect, falsely accused Captain Huo An and his elite unit of border troops—dedicated to maintaining peace between 36 tribes along the ancient Silk Road—of smuggling gold. They were then exiled to a windy mountain garrison known as the “wild geese fortress” as forced laborers to help rebuild it. To prevent widespread slaughter when a Roman legion from Parthia arrives, its general Lucius engages Huo An in a duel.
However, a sandstorm allows the latter to offer a draw and safety indoors, making them friends by circumstance. To complete the nearly impossible building endeavor, the Romans contribute their engineering expertise and extra manpower while the Chinese organize the pacified tribes. When it comes to returning to Parthia, Lucius was promised assistance, but instead, his treacherous rival Tiberius showed up with a new legion and a mad plan to kill both him and the blind youngster he was protecting. As allies come and loyalties are questioned, battles break out both inside the garrison city and outside on the battlefield.

After Beijing and Shanghai were destroyed, the decision was made to give the Chinese people a morale boost. This decision also helped rally support from the Western powers, who could see the conflict from the International Settlement in Shanghai, which is located close across Suzhou Creek.

11. Journey to the West (2013)
A frightening aquatic beast terrorizes a riverbank community. After killing a massive manta ray, a Taoist priest claims it was the devil. The people are informed by Sanzang, a self-described demon hunter, that the animal is not the real demon. The priest provokes him, and the villagers ignore him and hang him. Many of the townspeople are killed when the genuine demon reappears. Sanzang manages to free himself, and he and the survivors can beach the beast that transforms into a man. Then Sanzang pulls out a book of children’s songs and starts humming to the demon.
The demon strikes Sanzang in a rage. Duan, a different demon hunter, captures the demon and converts it into a puppet. Duan scoffs at Sanzang’s more compassionate strategy of using children’s rhymes to entice goodness from demons, which he claims his master taught him. Sanzang meets his master feeling defeated and laments his inadequacies in comparison to more ferocious demon hunters.
