The story follows a group of seven archaeologists who have been afflicted with a long-standing Inca curse following the discovery of an Ancient Inca temple. Every day, they wake up at the same time in Europe, after having been hallucinated by the Inca god each time they had fallen asleep. The sixth archaeologist, Indios, is unconscious after a crystal ball is thrown into his car, and the remaining archaeologists, Tintin, Haddock, and Indios, are taken to Moulinsart.
During a lightning strike, there is a power outage, and the Indians take advantage of the darkness to put the last archaeologist to sleep. Professor Tournesola, who had revealed himself to be a desecrator of the sanctuary, is then apprehended and forgiven by Tintin.
Tintin and his fellow archaeologists then set off to Peru, traveling through snow and forests to reach the Temple of the Sun, but are soon captured and must choose the day they will die from sunburn.
